수동태의 이해 ( 2 )

 

They say( believe ,  think ) that  ~~ 의 수동태 

단문으로 바꾸는 수동태와

복문으로 바꾸는 수동태 

두가지로 바뀐다. 

 

 

폭음은 단기기억을 심각하게 손상시킨다고 한다.

They say that binge drinking seriously impairs short-term memory.

 

단문 

=> Binge drinking is said to seriously impair short-term memory.

 

복문

=> It is said that binge drinking seriously impairs short-term memory.

 

 

 

독해를 위한 팁을 얘기해 본다면,

They say that ~~

They believe( think ) that ~~

People say that ~~

It is said that ~~

It is believed that ~~

위 표현들은 모두다  우리말로 하면 

사람들이 말하기를 ~~

사람들은 보통 생각한다 ~~

대부분의 사람들이 생각하는 것은 ~~~

 

이렇게 해석하면 된다. 

 

 

단문의 형태로는 아래와 같은 표현도 자주 등장한다.

 

It is usual to ~~

= It is not unusual to ~~

 

not unusual 은 usual 인데

강조하려고 이중부정을 쓴것이므로

자주봐서,  usual 처럼 받아들이는게

글을 빨리 읽어야 할때는 도움이 된다.

 

 

 완료 부정사와 쓰이는 수동태 

 

They say that he is very famous.

=> It is said that he is very famous.

=> He is said to be famous.

 

They say that he was very famous.

=> It is said that he was very famous.

=> He is said to have been very famous. 

 

말하는 것은 지금

유명한 것은 과거 이므로 

is said 보다 먼저라는 것을 보여주는

to have 의 완료부정사를 써서 나타낸다.

 

 

 

몇개 예문을 더 살펴보자

 

They believe that Allah is the only God.

=>It is believed that Allah is the only God.

=> Allah is believed to be the only God.

 

believe 도 현재

is 도 현재 이다

 

세번째 문장의 to be 자리에 완료 부정사를 

쓰지 않았다는 의미는

'Allah is believed' 이부분과 시제가 같다는 의미

 

 

 

They say that baseball was invented in New York in 1839.

=> It is said that baseball was invented in New York in 1839.

=> Baseball is said to have been invented in New York in 1839.

 

사람들이 말하는 것은 현재이고

야구가 발명된 것은 과거이다 

 

세번째 문장에서

to have been 의 완료부정사를 쓴것은

Baseball is said - 야구가 발명된것은 현재 얘기 되는 이야기 보다 

이전의 과거 사실 이라는 것을 알려준다
